This page is meant to help employees prepare for handling emergency situations.

Contact the Department of Public Safety (DPS) 24/7, 365 days a year at 315-443-2224:

  • Or by dialing #78 (#SU) from a cell phone.
  • Or by dialing 711 from a campus landline.
  • Or by utilizing the Orange Safe app.

Contact the City of Syracuse Police Department at 911.

Note: The Bird Library Security Office: (315)443-9754, is open evenings and weekends and is located in the first-floor front entrance.

Emergency Response 

The Libraries follows the lead of the University for all emergency responses. ALL emergency situations requiring immediate attention should be directed to the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The below basic procedures to follow for emergency situations are located on the DPS Emergency Procedures Page:

  • Active Threat
  • Bomb Threat/Suspicious Package
  • Crime In-Progress
  • Fire/Smoke
  • Hazmat
  • Medical Emergency
  • Nuisance/Wildlife
  • Power Outage
  • Severe Weather

All University employees are expected to familiarize themselves with the University’s emergency procedures. Please review this information regularly to be prepared in advance of an emergency.

The below resources are meant to provide additional information.

  • Dealing with a Disruptive Person Tools from the Department of Public Safety to help when interacting with difficult library users or when feeling threatened by a library user.

  • Disaster Recovery Manual - The Libraries’ Disaster Recovery Plan for library materials outlines procedures for salvaging a wide variety of library materials in the event of a disaster of minor emergency. This plan helps library employees cope with and recover materials from minor emergencies that typically involve 500 or less items, such as interior flooding or patron mishaps. NOTE: This document takes effect after the safety and security of library staff and patrons has been secured.

  • Emergency- Workspace and Safety - As a summary for reference, the document includes the above information on strategies to maintain a safe workplace, emergency procedures, information on the Orange Safe App, and much more.

Libraries’ Facilities and Security Office

To report building issues and problem, use the Facilities Issue Tracking Form (FIT)

The Libraries’ Facilities and Security Office provides support related to facilities services which includes:

  • Monitoring and work with custodial.
  • Monitoring building temperature/humidity.
  • Working with the physical plant on maintenance issues. 

For Bird Library, Facilities’ staff:

  • Keep facilities safe with floor monitors and DPS presence from 4pm – 7am Sunday – Thursday during the semester.
    • Security guard (Sunday – Thursday 4pm to midnight)
    • Security guard (Sunday – Thursday midnight – closing)
    • Weekend Coverage is 4pm to closing time.
  • Schedule and give permissions for doors, lights, elevators.
  • Close University side at 8pm each night (safety).
  • Close both Bird and Belfer and on call for Carnegie.
