Academic Course Goals

FYS 101 has three main academic goals. To better clarify and attain these main academic goals, two learning objectives accompany each. These learning objectives are designed to emphasize key concepts and experiences and improve student learning outcomes. They are listed below:

Goal 1: Support students in making a successful transition to Syracuse University life

  • Learning Objective 1a: Students will be able to identify academic and personal goals for their first year at Syracuse University
  • Learning Objective 1b: Students will develop an academic and wellness plan utilizing personal, campus, and community resources introduced in FYS 101 to begin to accomplish their goals

Goal 2: Develop awareness of the complex nature of identity to foster a sense of belonging at Syracuse University and beyond

  • Learning Objective 2a: Students will be able to describe components of their identity and how they relate to multiple communities
  • Learning Objective 2b: Students will identify ways in which they can connect with, and be a part of, the Syracuse University community

Goal 3: Build engaged citizenship skills to enhance student success and to contribute to a university welcoming to all

  • Learning Objective 3a: Students will recognize the diverse nature of the Syracuse University and greater Syracuse community
  • Learning Objective 3b: Students will begin to develop skills in engaging with perspectives different from their own in a way that promotes inclusion, understanding, and empathy
