Service Souvenirs: Objects that Speak Our Stories, Nov. 1-27, 2024: Anthony Assal (U.S. Navy)

By invitation from the Libraries, student veterans created a collection of items from their time in service that hold special meaning for them as it connects to place. These are on display for the month of November 2024 in honor of Veterans Day.

A Mini Drone

This photo was taken with the drone of myself and another member of my division on top of Koko Head, a common hiking trail on O’ahu’s SE side in November of 2020. This object represents the experiences on the island that made my time there worthwhile. Even though I didn’t get to travel as much as I hoped in the Navy, I still got to get some incredible views, meet some awesome people, and experience a culture that I found deep appreciation for. While many people go to Hawai’i for a dream vacation, most overlook the hidden beauty that lives beneath the consumerism and neglect the responsibility to preserve the natural beauty of the islands. Getting out and experiencing Hawai’i taught me a lot about mindfulness, conservation, and the importance of respecting the land you stand upon, much like the native land SU is on today.
