FYS 101: Course Topics

The Course Topics tab seeks to help you with discussions, readings, activities, and other coursework by providing resources to help give some context to certain topics that will be covered in FYS 101. We invite you to look around these pages and learn from various diverse resource contents and formats. Each page offers contextual information and definitions, as well as additional resources in the forms of books, articles, websites, podcasts, films, etc.

• Week 3 - Shared Experience
  • For this week, we will explore our experiences and how we are similar and dissimilar from each other. The resources from Week 1 and 2 will be useful for understanding this week.
• Week 4 - Intersectional Self
• Week 5 - Home College Experience (HCE 1)
  • In this week, you will begin working on your Home College Experience project! This is a course long project that focuses on building a Personal Engagement Plan. It will be helpful to take a look at the Syracuse University Resources tab for more information about opportunities on campus.
• Week 6 - Sense of Belonging
• Week 7 - Cultural Competency
• Week 8 - Home College Experience 2 (HCE 2)
  • This is a continuation of HCE and will showcase how you plan to get involved in communities on campus.
• Week 9 - Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination
• Week 10 - Microaggressions
• Week 11 and 12 - Intersectional Privilege, Oppression, and Marginalization
• Week 13 - Moving Forward
  • In this week, we will take time to reflect on what we have learned and thoughts about the future.
• Week 14 - Home College Experience 3 (HCE 3)
  • This is the final for this class and builds off of your previous HCE projects. This will wrap up all that you have learned and how you will be involved in SU communities.
