Overview

The Census Bureau conducts surveys and censuses of federal, state and local government activities and finances.    The Program Overview page lists some other interesting surveys conducted by the Census Bureau for other government agencies such as the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the National Center for Education Statistics.  Some of the more common programs include:

  • Consolidated Federal Funds Report - These data cover Federal expenditures or obligations for the following categories: grants, salaries and wages, procurement contracts, direct payments for individuals, other direct payments, direct loans, guaranteed or insured loans, and insurance. Dollar amounts reported represent either actual expenditures or obligations.
  • Census of Governments - Data are obtained on government organizations, finances, and employment. Organization data include location, type, and characteristics of local governments and officials. Finances and employment data are the same as in comparable annual surveys and include revenue, expenditure, debt, assets, employees, payroll, and benefits.
  • Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances - Data are obtained for revenue, expenditure, debt, and financial assets. Revenue data include taxes, charges, interest, and other earnings. Expenditure data include total by function (such as education and police protection), and by accounting category (such as current operations and capital outlays). Debt data include issuance, retirement, and amounts outstanding. Financial assets data included securities and other holdings, by type.
  • State Government Tax Collections - report provides a summary of taxes collected by state for up to 25 tax categories.  These tables and data files present the details on tax collections by type of tax imposed and collected by state governments.
