The Avery Review

The Avery Review

The Avery Review is an online journal dedicated to thinking about books, buildings, and other architectural media. The journal is published by Columbia University. We see the genres of the review and the critical essay as vital but still underutilized ways of exploring the ideas and problems that animate the field of architecture, and we hope to push these genres beyond their most familiar forms, whether journalistic or academic. Our aim is to explore the broader implications of a given object of discourse (whether text, film, exhibition, building, project, or urban environment), to expand the terrain of what we imagine architectural discourse to be, and to broaden the diversity of voices that our field typically hears from. We are interested in reviews that test and expand the reviewer’s own intellectual commitments—theoretical, architectural, and political—through the work of others. The Avery Review publishes new essays every other month during the academic year.

Hyphen

Hyphen

Hyphen is a print journal edited by Ph.D. students of the Department of Architecture at Penn State’s Stuckeman School. In a crowded field of architectural publications, it is our aim for the journal to serve as a much needed platform for speculation, experimentation, dialogue, and debate, bridging the divide between the specialized bodies of architectural knowledge that prevail not only in our department but also, increasingly, in the discipline at large. From the start, Hyphen is envisioned as a fundamentally interdisciplinary proposition, both facilitating a more pronounced discursive interconnectivity between the four research “clusters” that presently constitute the academic foci of our department — design computation; sustainability, “material matters”; and “culture, society, and space”— and striving to build productive new relationships by connecting our community here in State College to a broader network of architects, designers, scholars, and scientists

Our graduates are being equipped with competencies that range in scope from technical skills in designing architecture; conceptual precision in articulating ideas and linking ‘architecture thinking’ to other discourses including the humanities and social sciences; to representational finesse in utilizing analog, digital, and moving image methods to communicate ideas.

sofA

sofA

A group of Woodbury School of Architecture students developed a journal for the school. Under creative guidance of influential thinker and artist, April Greiman, the student group worked over the course of the year to pull together content as well as layout for a new journal called sofA.

“The name of the journal, sofA, is an extension of the acronym for the Woodbury University School of Architecture. The work that is presented is not intended to convey all that is happening in our school, but may bear witness to a few conversations that are ongoing,” explains Marc J Neveu, Los Angeles Architecture Chair. “The name, of course, is also the name of a piece of furniture and one that is ubiquitous in architecture studios. It’s a casual place for a late night conversation to begin and lead to new ways of thinking. It’s a place to lie down for a bit; to sleep (and to dream). It’s communal. Anyone can sit on it. There is room for everyone at some point or another. And, if you care to look, you might find a treasure hidden in the cushions.”

Much has changed over the years, and Spacework's evolution is a reflection of the shifts in both the institutional and social identity of the College of Architecture & the Built Environment. Spacework’s digital presence serves as a living archive with constant updates bringing more content and the ever-evolving voice of the students.
