Biology: Citation Management

What is Citation Management?

Citation management systems are tools to make your research easier and more organized. With a citation management system, you can:

  • Save and organize your references
  • Create a bibliography
  • Insert and format citations
  • Add in-text citations to your paper
  • Has hundreds of citation styles including APA, MLA, Chicago, and more

Software Tools at Syracuse

Syracuse Univeristy primarily uses Zotero and in some cases EndNote as citation management software. To figure out what software works for you and instructions on downloading and using these tools, check out these guides:

About Zotero

Zotero desktop software interface

Zotero (pronounced "zoh-TAIR-oh") is an application that collects, manages, and cites research sources. It's easy to use, connects with your web browser to download sources, and best of all it's free.

Zotero allows you to attach PDFs, notes and images to your citations, organize them into collections for different projects, and create bibliographies.

EndNote Program Options

There are a two versions of EndNote available:

  • EndNote 21, 20. x9, and x8: is a paid desktop program of EndNote, which can be synced to EndNote Online.

  • EndNote Basic: is a free option, where users have access to only the free EndNote Online system but with limited storage. The main difference is that you will limited storage online and no desktop program, so you will have to be online to use this citation management tool. However, you do have access to the Cite While You Write Tool. To create a free EndNote Basic account, click here.
