USS Charlotte Plaque

Every time I look at this USS Charlotte (SSN-766) plaque, I’m reminded of the years I spent deep beneath the ocean, five years of service that tested my endurance, patience, and courage. Life aboard a nuclear submarine demanded resilience under isolation, pressure, and uncertainty, yet it also forged a sense of calm strength I carry with me today. In the civilian world, when challenges arise or doubt sets in, I look at this plaque and remember what I have already endured. It reminds me that the same discipline and perseverance that got me through two years submerged can carry me through any obstacle. Service taught me resilience, returning to school has taught me how to transform that resilience into purpose.

Syracuse University Scarf

This Syracuse University scarf from the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families reminds me how far I’ve come since my enlisted days on the submarine. Dr. Mike Haynie gave me this my first semester at SU, from his personal collection, symbolizing the university’s commitment to veterans’ success. Whenever I start to feel like I’m falling behind my peers or haven’t accomplished enough, I look at it and remember the life I’ve built since leaving the Navy. Through Dr. Haynie’s leadership and the infrastructure he’s created, I found not just an education but a community where veterans can thrive. My wife now works at the IVMF, a career only possible due to Dr. Haynie commitment to veterans’ success post service. My wife and I bought our first home before 30 due to the environment Syracuse University and Dr. Haynie created, proof of how far dedication and support can take you. This scarf represents resilience, opportunity, and the power of service transforming into achievement.
