To edit guides, log in to LibApps: https://syr.libapps.com or click the Login to LibApps link at the bottom of your guide or the bottom of the libguides homepage or bottom of the databases A to Z list.

Contributor Levels

  1. Regular (Librarian account)
    • create guides and edit their own guides;
    • manage content items they created in the Assets area;
    • use widgets & APIs;
    • access statistics for the entire site

  2. Editor (Collaborator account)
    • They can edit guides to which they've been assigned, but cannot create guides or access guides they have not been assigned;
    • They have 1 username / password to access all guides they've been given access to within a system, and can change their password as they wish.
    • They have access to reuse content created by others in the system.
    • They can access the shared image manager images, just like regular users. (LibGuides CMS Only)
    • They can access the Content > Assets area to manage content items they added to the system (and only content they added).

LibGuides Documentation and Support

Non-SUL Accounts

Effective May 2013, only SUL librarians and staff members will be granted LibGuides accounts. This means that all research guide owners having the LibApps accounts necessary for research guide authorship and editing will be employees of Syracuse University Libraries.   

An exception to this policy is that non-SUL employee interns, students, faculty and others wishing to contribute to a specific research guide, including those SUL staff who lack a LibApps account, can be issued that account upon request to SUL Information & Technology Services lisd@syr.edu.  

For purposes of research guide editing, such a person will generally be assigned a LibApps 'editor' account status.  Individual guide owners (SUL librarians or SUL staff) subsequently control which specific guide(s) are assigned to that editor, as well as the duration of those editing rights.  Those with editor status on a guide(s) can revise, add or delete content to those and only those guides.  Editors cannot revise the publication status of the guides to which they are assigned nor can they independently author and publish brand new guides.

When to use LibGuides - and-LibGuides Publication Status Categories

Before creating a new guide, consider whether a LibGuide is the best platform for your work. Do not use LibGuides to present information about mainstream Libraries’ policies and services. Instead, use links to the individual policy or service web pages.

LibGuides are best for:

  • Course guides (ADV 611)
  • Discipline specific guides (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering)
  • Guides for specific audiences (Research Tools for Student-Athletes)

If your use falls outside of the above areas, contact a LibGuides Administrator and/or your supervisor to determine the best way to publish your information.

The three access levels for guides offer some measure of privacy, but not high levels of cybersecurity. Do not include highly sensitive information on any guide, regardless of status.

  • Published - available to everyone & indexed for search
  • Unpublished - only accessible through the admin interface & not indexed for search (default status).
  • Private - accessible to anyone who knows the URL, but private guides are not indexed for search and not visible on the libguide system's homepage.
