Order in which the backfile print journals will be de-accessioned.
What is happening and why?
On July 7, the Library began de-accessioning journals in the Sci-Tech Library for which online backfile equivalents were purchased earlier this year. De-accessioning is a logistically complex process and it is likely that you will see several people removing print journals from the Sci-Tech Library over the summer.
This de-accessioning provides much needed room for the ongoing growth of the print monograph collections in Sci-Tech. In addition, the purchase of the backfiles means that online access to this historically valuable record of 20th century science is now available to SU students and researchers anywhere anytime.
This project originated as the Library, responding to requests for information from the campus community, interviews with faculty, and faculty departmental meetings regarding ongoing storage needs for library collections, trialed several online backfiles of the most significant science journal packages as an alternative to offsite storage.
From March 1-March 31, 2010, the Library arranged with 4 major science publishers for trial access to older runs (backfiles) of chemistry and physics journals. In total, over 300 journals from 7 different backfile packages were evaluated. The Library was sensitive to concerns voiced about the legibility and accessibility of these backfile materials as scanned, rather than "born digital," documents and only purchased the backfiles after no negative feedback was received from any departments and faculty members regarding access or image quality.
