The Book Arts @ Syracuse

These pages are designed as a resource for students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts' School of Art and Design studying "the book" as a concept and structure and support presentations done for students, primarily in the Foundation Program.

Resources include images of examples from the collection of the Special Collections Research Center, "canned" subject searches of the Library's catalog, and a listing of examples elsewhere sorted by structure.

Book Arts Events:

  • Brodsky Series for Library Conservation: Video of lectures by John Dean, Hedi Kyle, Gary Frost, Chela Metzger, and Don Etherington on conservation/book arts topics and structures.
  • Basically Books – The Artwork of Susan Joy Share: In Basically Books: The Artwork of Susan Joy Share, the artist, bookbinder and performer, will show slides and video of her magical handmade boxes and books whose colorful contents include expanding structures, animated objects, and percussive sounds. Share combines a multitude of media derived from traditional bookbinding, sewing, painting, collage and sculpture. She will also show work she created for public art commissions in Anchorage.
  • Out of the Sky: 9/11, a Tribute – Werner Pfeiffer, Sculptor and Book Artist: Listen to and watch to the artist recount his experiences relating to 9/11 as he assembles and disassembles the Twin Towers.
  • Stations of a Bookbinder's Life – Twenty-five Years in the Field: In this lecture for the Cornell University Bookarts Club on October 11, 2007, Peter Verheyen, bookbinder, conservator, and founder of the Syracuse Conservation Laboratory, discusses his experiences as an apprentice in Germany, work as a binder and conservator, and the many twists and turns his career has taken over the past twenty-five years. Audio and PowerPoint slides available.

Workshops/Ongoing Projects:

  • An Alphabet in Your Own Backyard: 2-year project between Gail Hoffman's Foundation students in VPA, Peter Verheyen in the Library, and 4 area high schools.
  • Making Books with Children: Bookmaking workshop aimed at the children of Library staff that can be expanded and offered to a wider audience.
