SciFinder Documents

These guides are both for the SciFinder Scholar Desktop version.

On-Campus Availability

  • SciFinder Scholar @ Syracuse University allows six concurrent sessions. At present, four sessions are allocated for use by the desktop program and two for the web version. Usage of both products is being monitored and this allocation may be adjusted according to usage.

  • If all sessions are in use you will be asked to try again later. Connections can usually be made on a second attempt after 10 minutes. Please allow other researchers to use this resource by minimizing connect time and logging out as soon as searches are completed.

  • There are four public workstations in the the Science and Technology Library where this database can be used. Ask at one of the Library Reference Desks for the location of other Library workstations equipped with SciFinder Scholar.

  • Hours of availability: SciFinder Scholar is available 24 hours a day, except for regular downtime between 10:00 pm ET on Saturday to 1:00 am ET Sunday. SciFinder is also unavailable an additional hour on Saturday night, 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm ET, on the first Saturday of every month.

Trouble-shooting

  • Please be patient when you start up SciFinder Scholar. It can take from 10 to 40 seconds to connect to CAS.

  • SciFinder does not work off-campus, outside the syr.edu (IP 128.230.*.*) internet domain.

  • SciFinder also doesn't work on the SUNY/ESF campus, which has a separate access license (see download a copy from the ESF software server).

  • Check the list of Hardware and Software Requirements.

  • For software installation assistance contact Thomas Keays by e-mail, htkeays@syr.edu, or telephone, 315-443-9769.
