Experts@Syracuse is a powerful tool that enables new insights into the scholarly expertise and collaborative opportunities that exist within Syracuse University and at other universities. It is designed to help faculty members, departments, and potential collaborators identify who is working in what research or scholarly areas at Syracuse University. Experts@Syracuse is based on tailored research profiles that are automatically created, and require minimal effort to maintain. Profiles include publications tracked by Scopus (an enormous interdisciplinary database), grants from the OSP database and University departmental affiliations. Experts@Syracuse is a collaborative initiative co-sponsored by the Office of Research and the Syracuse University Libraries.
Grants are added by the Office of Sponsored Programs.
Press & Media mentions are automatically added from a system called Newsflo that is part of Pure. It searches LexisNexis resources and matches them. See the box to the right for instructions on disclaiming/removing press & media mentions.
Publications indexed in Scopus are also automatically added. If you have publications that are not indexed in Scopus but would like to include in Experts@Syracuse, there are additional options for adding them.
Using the “Add New” button in the back end of the system, WorldCat, Crossref, Mendeley, EBSCOhost, PubMed, Web of Science, or arXiv can be searched rather than adding the information from these locations manually. Look for the “import from online source” option to search these resources within Experts@Syracuse. Please note, citation counts and h-index will not update based on these additions. That is calculated only by publications indexed in Scopus.Click on the Editor button's drop down menu.
All other items can be added manually. Select the relevant tab near the top of the guide for Faculty/Staff or Users/Editors for guidelines on adding other research outputs and activities.
Experts@Syracuse is designed to promote research and scholarly collaboration by making it clear to internal and external parties what Syracuse University’s areas of expertise are and who the individual experts are. Experts@Syracuse makes it easy to find and connect with experts in a given field within Syracuse University and at other universities, providing value for faculty, staff and students. Another key feature for individuals that have a Research Profile is the “Funding Discovery” module, where funding opportunities that most closely match an expert’s research area are automatically delivered. Experts@Syracuse also creates CVs in multiple useful formats at the click of a button that can be exported in a number of ways.
Experts@Syracuse research profiles are based on publication data fed directly from Scopus, a proprietary interdisciplinary database licensed by the Libraries, primarily focused on journal publications in the biological, medical, physical, social, and engineering sciences. Syracuse University’s initial implementation of this tool includes researchers or scholars from the schools, colleges, and departments that most frequently publish in these journals. This may be expanded to other areas of the University in the future depending on feedback received from the campus community and availability of resources.
Experts@Syracuse Research Profiles use readily available Scopus publication data as well as funded grant information from OSP’s database to create a "fingerprint" of a researcher's subject expertise. This fingerprint is continuously and automatically updated as publications enter the Scopus database, which means very little, if any, manual maintenance is required to retain a current and accurate research profile. Profiled researchers or scholars can add, edit, or delete research interests and keywords they are associated with by logging into their personal profiles.
Research Profiles are updated with new Scopus publication information and awarded grant activity on a monthly basis. Faculty affiliation information is reviewed and updated by the Experts@Syracuse team twice per year, at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. If a request for a new faculty affiliation is needed more rapidly, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
You may create additional funding discovery profiles. If your research has many components or if you are breaking into a new field, you can create a new funding profile using different terms from your finger print. Within funding discovery, select the down arrow next to default profile to create the new one.
