ADV 425 - Integrated Advertising Campaigns (Spring 2020)

An SU Libraries research starting points guide for students enrolled in ADV 425

  Book Locations

Circulating books on advertising reside primarily on Bird Library’s 4th Floor.  Call numbers on floor 4 in the range HF 5801-6182 – should all be advertising related – albeit – additional titles may fall anyplace within call number prefixes between HD and HF (3rd & 4th floors – Bird Library).  Book titles covering mass media, television, radio, etc., are mostly on Bird Library’s 5th Floor.  But other locations may also hold titles of interest.  For example, titles with a focus on political advertising are on Bird Library’s 4th floor.  Use basic and advanced searches in the Library's SUMMON search engine OR - in the  Classic Catalog to determine specific titles and locations of interest.

  • SUMMON:  A search engine for most of the Syracuse University Libraries' collections and other resources beyond the SU Libraries.  Includes articles, books, journals, maps, sound recordings, archival materials, government documents, and more.  Use for searching for articles.  Narrow or expand results using multiple search refinements.

  • Classic Catalog:  A list of print and electronic materials available in the Syracuse University Libraries.  Includes books, journals, maps, sound recordings, archival materials, government documents and more.  Search by keyword, author, title, subject heading, or call number.

  Identifying Circulating Books on Advertising

You may wish to explore the SU Libraries Classic Catalog to identify recent and older published books about the advertising industry, interactive advertising, advertising writing, electronic commerce, branding and the like.  In addition to entering keywords relevant to a subject or title of interest, an efficient way to review concise lists of books on these topics is to:

Enter each of the following, one at a time, into the catalog as a "subject heading" search (NOT a "keyword anywhere" search).  Then browse the book titles appearing on the subsequent search results lists.  Alternatively, you can enter these search phrases into the SU Libraries SUMMON search engine:

advertising

advertising copy

brand name products

electronic commerce

Internet advertising

Additional Subject Headings:

Want to explore other subject headings on advertising?  Using the Classic Catalog (basic search screen), or the Library's SUMMON search engine, type in subject heading search terms such as:

Google Scholar

Many researchers use free tools like Google Scholar (GS) to identify helpful books or journal articles.  Check the Library's online Classic Catalog and/or Journal Locator for availability at Syracuse.  If not at SU, consider submitting an interlibrary loan request via the library's ILLIAD service.

Other Libraries

WorldCat  A tool for identifying books and other items on advertising, branding, interactive marketing, etc. available at libraries other that Syracuse University Libraries.  Sorts search results by information format/physical type, thus one can readily identify “books,” “visual material (Video/DVD),” “archival material,” etc.  Books can usually be delivered to SU via interlibrary loan (https://illiad.syr.edu ). Other audiovisual and archival material may require physical travel to view the items and/or the libraries in question may offer fee-based duplication/delivery services.
